I love stereo imaging, but for your application of samples for theater sound? I wound think mono is the way to do it. soon it will be the matter of recording technique/ method and trying to get the location-recording sounds you are after, trying mics and such to see what works and sounds the best. Inverters kill off 20% of our storage capacity. I do this a lot for mobile PA where our primary source is battery. I would personally just convert the MOTU to DC, but that requires some skill and confidence. You can get a 150W PSW inverter for $125, but I think at that point you could buy a DC powered interface with that money. It'll be up to the MOTU how much of that gets to the recording. And not just because it's MSW, but because the quality of inverter output is pretty proportional to the retail price. If you insist on using the MOTU, your MSW inverter is gonna throw plenty of noise. I have a little USB interface/mixer with phantom power that runs off USB bus power. Since you only need 2 channels, you can easily find one that's USB bus powered. I would then recommend using a recording interface that has a DC input and power it directly off of a battery. I actually think using a decent quality microphone and recording to your cell phone would be just fine for this purpose. If you're not married to an interface workflow, the field recorder suggestion is something I would consider as well. Then go home, eject the sd card from the Edirol, put it in the card reader, and offload the 2-channel. I could probably do what you are trying to do with my cheep-bone Edirol R-09, 2 condenser mics -> a battery powered phantom power suppy -> 2 direct boxes -> 2x 1/4" to stereo 1/8" 3.5mm adapter wire to -> Edirol. You also need to clarify if you require phantom power, but you can do that with an inline battery-powered phantom power supply. Also, do you know anyone? Can you just borrow something instead of own it? Often I feel a little guilty some of the used gear deals I locate online. You can probably do the same thing in the UK. In the US, if you hunt and peck via eBay you can usually find something for 5 cents on the dollar. Why not use a Marantz cassette? Marantz has made about 20 models of field recorders both analog and digital, some have XLR in. Good luck.Įdit: but you would probably need a mixer to go with handheld recorder. I have one of these antiquated things, it works fine, can do line-in via 1/8" 3.5mm stereo mini-jack. The 2016 TEC Award shows this: Recording Devices

Mmm mmm love the Motu 828 Mk2, but you probably need a portable digital field recorder.

I would use the DAW for editing and possible mixing. Please note that new reddit accounts are unable to make posts here, so please direct your questions to the "No Stupid Questions" Thread My logic is that instead of buying another MOTU 828 (I don't need a MK2) I could spend a bit more (OK about $1000 as the 828 is going for about $500 used) more and get the HD24. It uses Ethernet or an optional Firewire interface. I only have one MOTU 828 right now and would like to avoid buying more AD/DA and that is why I see the HD24 as maybe a solution.Ĭome to think of it I don't even need the MOTU to pass the HD24 tracks back and forth. I can always dump back to HD24 for mixing via my console as well. The HD24 sort of replaces 3 ADATs and at 24 bits to boot! Also no sync or rewind waiting time.Īfter the tracking I would probbaly dump into DAW via the MOTU 828 and then edit and/or even mix. I was using ADATs before and I kind of like the immediacy of just recording straight to tape. Reason being I could work much faster on a tracking session. I have made my decision on a board and now I am thinking of rather than recording straight to a DAW using my current MOTU 828 that I would get an Alesis HD24.
